feet elevation here. reporting atop mount hamilton where, yes, it's snowing, roberta gonzales for kpix 5. >> that vehicle can go anywhere. the mobile weather lab did make it down safely. you can stay on top of the weather in your neighborhood with our interactive high-def doppler radar. it's on our website, cbssf.com/weather. breaking news. a massive fire is burning at a popular shopping and entertainment area in downtown kansas city. it started about an hour ago when a car hit a gas main outside a restaurant. people reported hearing the explosion from blocks away. there are reports of several injuries. it's unclear how many people are hurt and how badly. new at 5:00 a first look at the inside of a danville home crushed by a giant tree. the 50-foot oak came down yesterday on alameda diablo. the tree took out the roof above a home office. three people were inside at the time. no one was hurt. >> i don't know in it fell. it's been here for 300 or 400

years. i don't know why it chose my window of occupancy to fall because it wasn't diseased. it was in great shape. >> that house is now uninhabitable but the homeowners say they are insured and in the process of seeing what they need to do next. the city of oakland has a choice to make: start paying for the extra help from the chp or risk losing it altogether. kpix 5's ann notarangelo on what it would cost to keep those extra officers around. ann. >> reporter: well, allen, last year as you probably remember, late last year, oakland's crime rate was really spiraling out of control. things have started to improve and the oakland police department is giving some of the credit to the chp. reporter: november 1st, the chp ginned additional local and federal law enforcement personnel to stop the escalating violent crime on oakland streets. they focused on the most dangerous crimes, homicides, shootings and robberies.

>> sometimes they were in east oakland, sometimes in west oakland in high crime zones. and then the officers would stop and contact individuals who were engaged either in criminal activity or what appeared to be criminal activity. >> reporter: the chp initially paid for the extra patrols about $300,000 to $325,000 in overtime pay for three months but in january let the city know it couldn't continue. >> with our budget we have budget constraints that we have to operate within, and so that's what we're trying to do, be fiscally responsible with our designated budget. >> reporter: but the city wants them to stay so the oakland city council is considering spending $162,000 to continue the contract for another 60 days. >> anytime you can bring additional law enforcement resources to reduce crime, that's priceless. >> reporter: what can the city expect to get for that kind of money? in the past few months, the chp has made more than 2100

enforcement stops, issued nearly 1800 citations and arrested 288 people resulting in 349 charging incidents. 13 firearms have been recovered. more than 700 cars have been impounded. and 83 stolen vehicles were recovered. >> the numbers are very impressive. they have definitely made an i am pant in reducing crime with us. >> reporter: as of today there have been 12 homicides this year. last year at this time there were 17. they have also seen a reduction in shootings in the past several weeks. >> statistics show when we have focused our efforts using these additional resources in specific areas, we have seen crime reduction. >> reporter: the city council will vote tonight whether or not to extend the contract with the chp. if they decide to go ahead with it, some of the money could come from grants or the city may pick up the tab. ann notarangelo kpix 5. police have sided the gunman in this morning's -- have identified the gunman in this morning's spree. he allegedly shot and killed a

woman in his orange county home before carjacking three vehicles. police say he then killed two of the drivers. when police spotted him in the city of orange, he killed himself. new details about a former lapd cop's hit list. two of christopher dorner's top targets are speaking out about their ordeal. a police captain, his wife and their 6 children were at the top of dorner's hit list. the couple says although they feared for their lives, they had to be strong for their children. >> the fear was very real that i had no way to protect my kids right then and there. and i was very scared that something could happen to them before i could get them safe. >> the captain was on the board that fired dorner back in 2008. police provided round the clock protection for the family and more than 50 others after they were named in dorner's manifesto. the week long manhunt for dorner ended last tuesday near big bear, california. police say dorner killed

himself after a shootout with deputies. a missing 10-month-old girl from castroville has been found dead. the child was reported missing earlier this month. her body was found after the mother's boyfriend jesus espinoza gave police a general description of where she might be. he was arrested for the baby's murder in los angeles last night. and then moved to the monterey county jail in salinas this afternoon. san francisco police are hoping you can help them catch a killer. investigators say 23-year-old shea acosta was apparently gunned down for no reason on february 10. acosta was walking to a friend's house about 2 a.m. when he was murdered at webster. police have no suspects. cal's basketball team just wants this to go away. tonight what the star player says about the shove and the coach who pushed him. >> three minutes was all they needed to get away with millions in diamonds. how a band of thieves pulled

mission rock development near at&t park. the giants had their first tenant to anchor the billion- dollar project. anchor brewing company the maker of anchor steam will take over an area at pier 48. they plan a brewery, restaurant and museum for the space. >> we're not just going to build a brewery here. we are going to build a destination in san francisco. the people from around the world are going to want to come see as well as locals too. >> san francisco's hometown brewer says the project will allow it to quadruple its production. the san francisco giants are behind the mission rock project. the plan to develop that vast waterfront area across from mccovey cove and not far from the ballpark. kpix 5 reporter mike sugerman on what else the giants have planned for the 27-acre site. >> reporter: allen, the big news today is anchor beer is going to be brewed here but the bigger story is it's going to be 1,000 units of housing and a million square feet of office space and quarter million

square feet o retail. it's the latest of big changes coming to san francisco' waterfront. reporter: the mission rock project is one of the biggest but just the latest project happening. >> down here on the whole waterfront it's really been exciting to see that. >> reporter: what changes will have been and are still brewing. at&t park started the renaissance. mission bay a virtual brand-new neighborhood. the ucsf campus still going up where only the brave once went. there's a planned warriors arena up the road and down the road, literally there could be changes coming too. >> suddenly a place like dogpatch, which was beyond off the map, is next door to mission bay. >> reporter: this is dogpatch, the next neighborhood down. funky with abandoned rundown factories and home to the mobile homeless. also, trendy wine bars and restaurants. >> it's kind of in the sweet spot right now where there's all this cool stuff but it still feels kind of raw and

coach a reprimanded. tonight, for the first time... we hear from both coach montgomery and . it's the shove that got the cal coach a reprimand. we hear from both the coach and the player he shoved. kpix 5's juliette goodrich on the uc-berkeley campus with details from today's news conference. juliette. >> reporter: hi, allen. today coach mike montgomery admitted he has had a few sleepless nights after all of this and the shoving incident and today, he talked publicly along with player allen crabbe about the shove. reporter: the cal bears were trailing usc on sunday when emotions overtook cal coach mike montgomery. he was talking with star player

allen crabbe. this video capturing the emotion and shove. >> it's obvious i made a mistake and i feel very badly about it. there is no place in sports that you can basically put your hands on one of your student athletes. >> reporter: shoved player allen crabbe and player of the week says there are no hard feelings. he just wants to move on. >> i didn't take anything negative out of the situation. i just felt like, you know, he was doing it to, you know, help me pick up my play. like i said, under the bridge. like i said, it's over with. >> but cal's director of athletics sandy barbour made it clear the shove was unacceptable. senator yee calling for a one- game suspension. but the university said no suspension. >> apologized to allen and apologized to the team. >> reporter: the cal shove isn't the only time a coach has let emotions get the best of them. and in the news conference i asked the player allen crabbe,

i said, what would you do if the tables were turned and you shoved your coach? and he paused for a couple of minutes and said, he wouldn't put his hands on his coach. he also said it's time to move on, though, and look toward the next game which is this thursday in oregon. right now five games to go in the pac-12 and they are just two games away from first. at uc-berkeley, juliette goodrich kpix 5. another tearful day in court for south african oscar pistorius. the man known as the blade runner told a judge he shot his girlfriend reeva steenkamp to death by mistake. pistorius says he didn't have his prosthetics when he fired thinking an intruder was behind the bathroom door. prosecutors argue the sprinter was wearing his legs and opened fire after the couple got into a fight and she hid in the bathroom. the model and law graduate was honored at a private funeral in her hometown of port elizabeth today. she often campaigned against

domestic violence. it took 8 thieves just three minutes to rob millions of dollars worth of diamonds from a swiss-bound plane. the masked men crashed through the fence at around the airport in brussels with two cars, made their way to the plane and pulled off the heist. police found a burnt-out van close to the airport but no sign of the thieves. new cars come with a lot of protections but it is no guarantee that if something goes wrong that it can be fixed kpix 5 consumerwatch reporter julie watts with what you can do if you get stuck. reporter: leonard's car can talk. it just won't listen. >> it will not voice activate. >> reporter: haskins says that's just one of the problems with the touchscreen control system in his 2012 ford focus. he also has issues with the phone, radio, navigation features, and after 12 visits to the ford service department, they still don't work. >> each time they said, we can't duplicate it, we can't basically fix it. >> reporter: that could mean he has a lemon and is entitled to

a new car or refund. according to california law, a lemon is any vehicle still under warranty that can't be fixed after a reasonable number of repair attempts. but to get relief, car owners have to make a case that their car qualifies and that's not always easy. while some turn to lemon lawyers, others turn to the bbb. >> we try to settle the complaints working with the company and the customer. >> reporter: rob davis helps run auto line a free dispute resolution program run by the bbb. car owners submit the complaint and auto line contacts the carmaker and tries to work out a settlement. if that doesn't work cases can go to arbitration where both sides meet in a local bbb office. >> our goal is to make sure that the process is there every time you come in the door. >> reporter: they aim to settle cases in 40 days start to finish and boast excellent customer satisfaction. but public data shows car owners are denied more than 60% of the time. so his odds aren't great, but

many nor how badly they are hurt. an initial call for three ambulances has gone up to 10 ambulances now. we'll bring you more information as we get it. a cold rainy day today. streets were wet in oakland this morning. and this was the scene in many parts of the bay area. but paul, i can't stop looking at our local mountains with all that gorgeous snow. it's stunning. >> we didn't have winter for about five or six weeks. mother nature trying to squeeze it all in. hello! exhibit a. i actually have exhibits a, b and c how winter is back. starting with snowfall if you were driving in the south bay or east bay you may have seen this. that's the top of mount diablo. that's not just a dusting. we're talking an inch or two of snowfall above 2500 feet and the winter weather advisory just expired. beautiful pictures there. higher elevations getting snowfall. now let's turn to the stuff that is not as fun. hail reported in the south bay. yeah. kind of looks like snow at first glance. but it will eventually melt. temperatures only in the low 40s today for much of the day in the south bay. so we had hail in san jose, we had snow in mount diablo and

let's go a little farther to the north about 3 or 4 hours to the north. north of red bluff, that's a funnel cloud that eventually did touch down and the national weather service confirms that was a tornado in northern california earlier today. so yes, mother nature throwing us a lot of punches in different varieties today. snow, hail, tornado and, of course, the rainfall. now we look at the radar and we'll zoom down to the south bay because everybody else is clearing out but just south of san jose between there and morgan hill, we are still seeing some mountain snowfall. and see that lightning bolt just west of the highway 101 icon that is a thunderstorm that is blossomed just to the south of san jose east of los gatos. moving toward morgan hill where it will be raining rather steadily over the next let's say 15 or 20 minutes. this kind of tells the story, san jose clearing out but lots of drips on the camera there but toward dab dan where that snow is still there on the top of the mountain, we are now seeing clearing skies, as well. concord at 46, livermore 45. san francisco 47, 43 san jose. today tied for the coldest day

of the winter, only 49 degrees in downtown san francisco today. tonight when we clear out, it's going to get chilly. concord 34, fremont 34, san jose 35. san rafael 36. and santa rosa 32. so a rapid return to winter most of the moisture now pushed down to our south and east a couple more showers possible this evening but the bulk of the activity is now moving out. so you may be wondering what's next? front's gone no rainfall tomorrow but the chill is going to stay because our source of air is still coming down from the north and it's going to stay that way through saturday. it will be chilly at night, brisk in the afternoon with a little bit of a breeze and temperatures will be below normal for the next four or five days. so showers done, we'll have cool mornings, the afternoons chilly and breezy through the weekend. how about it mid-february. concord 57. santa clara 56. san mateo tomorrow only 55. even with some sunshine, looking at 57 for san ramon richard 58 and the upper 50s

for mill valley, daly city, south san francisco and in downtown. a couple of degrees milder and less wind on thursday and friday. here comes another front much weaker showers on saturday and next week we'll be back to the low to mid-60s. so this is a chilly pattern that will be with us for a while. most of the activity though all hail, tornadoes and all that good stuff is done. >> thank you. just cold we'll be right back.

is she hungry? feeling sick? is she afraid of somebody? let's just go down the list and find out exactly what the baby is trying to communicate. >> reporter: now spanish researchers have cracked the baby code. >> they could decode it and tell me why, if i had a reference sheet every time she cried that would be great. >> reporter: listen to the eyes and lists end to the sound. an angry baby keeps his eyes half closed looking in apparently no direction with an open mouth. his cry goes up and up and up. a scared baby keeps his eyes open all the time and moves his head backwards. a scared cry begins with tension, then explodes. and a baby in pain, his eyes are constantly closed and he is frowning. the cry starts suddenly at maximum intensity. in the study, the researchers found most parents could not figure out why their babies were crying especially in the case of anger and fear. but don't worry, says this pediatrician. time is on your side. >> most parents by the time the baby is three or four months old they understand the crying

and they can tend to those babies much faster and more quicker. that's when the comfort level comes in. >> reporter: now, in the study, parents had the easiest time recognizing when their baby was crying in pain. that makes sense in terms of evolution. crying in this case is a warning sign of a potentially serious threat to health or survival. >> figure it out. the sooner the better. we'll be right back.

and women revolt against a culture of holly williams in india with the protests rocking the world's largest democracy. >> reporter: how did you have the courage to speak out? captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. we could only imagine what los angeles police officers and their families were going through as they were being targeted by a fired cop out for revenge. well, today, we found out as they told their stories. the former officer, christopher dorner, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound one week ago tonight, his body recovered from the ruins of a burned-out cabin in san bernadino, where he holed up. over ten days, dorner allegedly killed four people, including two law enforcement officers. and he was prepared to kill more. john miller spoke to two of them.
